However there are occasionally gaps in the booking calendar when you can have a long week for 2/3rds of a full week which works out at under £100 a night in low season. That has to be good value for a good cottage in such a lovely part of Northumberland.

If you would like to be kept uptodate with late availability offers then please let Vicky know your email and/or your telephone number.

Nantucket is one of our most popular cottages. Being so close both to Bamburgh and within a short walk of the beaches it offers quality accommodation at a reasonable price.

However we do find that occasionally there are gaps in the booking calendar and we have a number of people who have left their emails or telephone numbers with us so that we can contact them when these late availability deals come up.

You can basically have a long week end right beside the beach for around £120 a night in low season. Now that has to be good value! Check the availability here

Short breaks are a minimum of 3 nights charged at two thirds of the weekly price and extra nights charged at 15% of the weekly price. Short breaks can only be booked with the owners consent and usually can not be booked far in advance.

It seems strange to talk of offers and deals on one of the most popular self catering houses in Northumberland. But we do get cancellations and sometimes these can be at very advantageous prices. It really depends upon how close to the booking week you are.

If you would like to be kept informed of any cancellations or late deals please email Vicky at

enquiries@northumbria-byways.com

She will then keep your contact details separately.

We do have a good selection of other quality cottages but would start by suggesting that you have a look at the “Old school house“. It is also part of Howick Hall estates and just a little further back from the sea but still a quality cottage within easy reach of the coastal paths and rock pools.

For alternative cottages we have our main listings here

But there are also some great quality cottages inland

Dunsdale and Hethpool Mill in the College Valley

and

The Deeps down on the Northumberland/Durham border.

These three are remote cottages in unique locations. You couldn’t buy houses like this for love or money…so well worth seeing them.

Pilgrims rest at Shilbottle

This attractive cottage a former coachman’s quarters adjoins a beautiful Grade II listed stone pele tower and house dating back to 1380. The village is near both the historic town of Alnwick (3 miles) with its famous gardens and magnificent castle and the fabulous coast of Northumberland. The nearest beach is 2.5 miles away. Holiday makers have full use of the owners’ stunning secluded garden with patio area, lawns and flower beds set in 1 acre of land. Shilbottle is ideally situated, being only 1 mile from the A1, for visiting all parts of this historic region including the coast, the Cheviot Hills, the Borders and Hadrian’s Wall. Nearby Alnmouth railway station makes visiting Edinburgh or Newcastle for the day an easy option. Coastal golf courses, river/sea angling and horse riding all nearby. Watercolour painting workshops available in the garden studio of the artist owner by arrangement in advance.

The Middle ‘ In – Alnwick

Situated directly opposite the magnificent Alnwick Castle, this first floor apartment which occupies part of a Grade II listed building provides excellent accommodation of a high standard within easy walking distance to all the amenities of this historic town. The famous gardens which were created as a place of contemplation, inspiration, education and fun are accessible to everyone. The latest additions being The Poison Garden, The Tree House and The Labyrinth. Alnwick has many architectural features which can be traced through the ages from war torn mediaeval times to a peaceful Georgian era, through the affluent reign of Queen Victoria to present day. The beautiful beaches of the Heritage coast are within 5 miles. A short drive to the west of the town takes you up onto the moors and offers breathtaking views of the Cheviot Hills which provide a wealth of footpaths and bridleways for a variety of different walks.

These two houses are, as their names suggest, close to the coast and just outside Berwick. They share the same owner and can be booked together to provide quality accommodation for an extended family.

Beach View

Within a 5 minute walk from the golden sandy beach, this spacious self contained apartment has been tastefully decorated to an excellent standard. It occupies the whole of the ground floor of the owner’s home and stands in an enviable position with panoramic views out to sea, the pier at Berwick upon Tweed and in the distance, The Farne Islands. All rooms in the apartment are of generous proportion and have laminate flooring making this the ideal location for the less mobile. This area steeped in history has unspoilt beaches, majestic castles and is within a short drive of Holy Island which can be reached across the causeway at low tide. The charming market town of Berwick upon Tweed is on the other side of the River Tweed. It is famous for the Elizabethan fortified walls which encircle the town and the remarkable rail bridge built by Robert Stephenson. The town offers a wide selection of shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes as well as a weekly market and an arts theatre. Bus and rail links are excellent.

Island View

From this semi detached house the views are spectacular, to the north the pier and lighthouse at Berwick upon Tweed and southwards Lindisfarne and The Farne Islands. The house provides modern comfortable accommodation making it the ideal choice for a family seaside holiday being only a 5 minute walk to a sandy beach. Just over the River Tweed the town of Berwick is steeped in history and fascinating architecture with fine stone buildings, porticos and pantiled roofs. From here one can stroll along the impressive Elizabethan defence walls and enjoy lovely views over the estuary and out to sea. This is an excellent location for those seeking a holiday without the need to drive since Berwick is on the main east coast line, with excellent train and bus links. The cultural city of Edinburgh is a stunning train ride away through wonderful countryside. Out door enthusiasts will enjoy walking, fishing, sea angling, cycling, golfing, horse riding, quad biking, and climbing.

==================================================================

The Bathing House at Howick

The Bathing house at Howick is our most popular holiday house. Well known as being literally alongside the sea as well as the coastal path it is an iconic image of Northumberland. However there are alternatives and here is a selection of good quality houses close to the sea.

First off the Bathing house itself

This truly unique and most charming Grade II listed cottage stands in possibly the most idyllic and desirable location on the Northumberland coast. Set in a superb and secluded position on the cliff edge with a sandy cove below, it commands panoramic coastal views from every window. The majestic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle can be seen in the north, whilst to the south there are distant views of Coquet Island. The coastline in this region is characterised by a mixture of rocky inlets and lovely sandy beaches with attractive walks along the cliff tops.

=============================================================================

The Old Coastguard cottage

Dramatically situated overlooking the sea and the picturesque harbour at Burnmouth this colourful cottage is packed with character and retains many original features. Built here around 1850 because of its amazing vantage point, as the name suggests, this was the home of the coastguard in years gone by. Nowadays, after having been fully renovated, it has become a haven for outdoor lovers with excellent walking, bird watching, diving and fishing all within walking distance. The nautical décor is enhanced by the seafaring paintings displayed on the walls, some of which have been painted by the owner, an accomplished artist. The ‘look out’ on the front of the cottage has panoramic views of the ever changing seascape.

Finally if you are after a truly remarkable holiday house, in a unique situation but away from the sea then check out

Dunsdale

- the highest house in Northumberland. Click here ….Dunsdale

or The Deeps

- remote country house previously owned by Rowan Atkinson. Close to Hexham, Tyne Valley and Newcastle.

Both these houses offer good quality living in locations which take your breath away. Because they are away from the popular coastal resorts you are talking about weekly rates which are literally half of what they are on the busy coast. So you can have 2 weeks for the price of one when compared to coastal houses.

Coastal cottages sleeping up to 8 people.

These cottages all sleep between 6 to 8 people and are close to the Northumberland coast.

Nantucket, Bamburgh

Built in the late 19th century to accommodate the families of workers renovating nearby Bamburgh Castle, this deceptively spacious Grade II listed cottage is situated on the southern outskirts of the coastal village of Bamburgh, a short walk across the dunes to a magnificent sandy beach. The cottage benefits from a recent update and provides contemporary well designed holiday accommodation, in a quiet location with fields behind.

Old Coastguard cottage, Burnmouth

It provides a wonderful haven for wildlife including newts, swans, herons, ducks and seabirds and a large decked area looks out over the full length of the pond.

Quality holiday cottages around Brampton in Cumbria

We have a good selection of quality cottages situated around the market town of Brampton in Cumbria.

They are all within easy reach of Hadrian’s Wall, the North Pennines and the Eden Valley.

Old Chapel cottage in Hayton

his traditional stone built cottage is tucked away in the charming village of Hayton near Brampton. The cottage has retained many original features including amazing original beams creating a cosy romantic atmosphere for those looking for a quiet relaxing break.

What we think: Hayton is a pretty village between Carlisle and Brampton. You have easy access to a lot of beautiful countryside. Hayton has a small school and a pub – it is upmarket, pretty and affluent.

For more information see here

The Byre, The Stable and the Dairy at Milton Mains

Situated on a working farm in the village of Milton close to the Northumbrian and Cumbrian border, nestling in the foothills of the North Pennines, The Stable, The Byre and The Dairy are a row of three stone built cottages skilfully converted from farm buildings and an old dairy. During the restoration many original features like beamed ceilings and exposed stonework have been carefully retained.

What we think: Milton is a little out of Lanercost and Brampton along the road up into the Pennines. You have easy access to some lovely countryside and these cottages are good quality conversions,

Easby Farm, near Brampton

Easby Farm Cottage stands in a peaceful former farm courtyard, in the secluded hamlet of Easby midway between Lanercost and the market town of Brampton. The cottage has been impressively modernised to create a deceptively spacious and charming holiday home with original beamed ceiling.

What we think: Brilliant location and on a farm. Comfortable and easy holiday. Lots to do nearby.

Lanercost cottages

A courtyard with a selection of 6 quality cottages

What we think: These courtyard cottages have been developed and furnished to a high standard. With the priory next door as well as tearoom and gift shop you will have plenty to see and do.Convenient, easy and relaxing.

HaytonGate – Lanercost

ituated in an elevated position directly on the Hadrian’s Wall Path this detached stone cottage has been skilfully converted to provide excellent quality accommodation whilst retaining many original features with exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings. It stands in a peaceful, rural setting with open views across meadows and the “Wall”. The Coast to Coast ‘The Roman Way’ cycle route passes close by. The area around the cottage, known locally as “God’s Own Country” is close to the centre of the Roman Wall. With wide open spaces and captivating views the region is relatively undiscovered so it is a perfect location for a truly relaxing break.

What we think: It is unusual to get a cottage right on the Wall. It’s pretty, well situated and quiet. In many ways the kind of house most of us would like to buy as a second home.

Alpha Rise – Gilsland

This spacious former Joiners workshop offers luxurious, contemporary accommodation in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site. Recently converted by local craftsmen to the highest standard, Alpha Rise is situated on the outskirts of Gilsland, a village set in beautiful dramatic countryside on the border between Northumberland and Cumbria. It is an ideal base to explore the central section of Hadrian’s Wall and enjoy the taste of rural village life, within easy reach of Birdoswald, Vindolanda and Housesteads.

What we think: Gilsland has a long history and there is much to explore here. This house provides a convenient base.

Stonecroft – Gilsland

Standing in an elevated position close to the Northumbrian/Cumbrian Border on the outskirts of Gilsland, this exceptionally spacious stone built bungalow provides a peaceful rural location close to Hadrian’s Wall. It is a truly excellent venue for both walking and touring holidays. The Lake District, the Northumberland National Park, Kielder Water, the North Pennines and the Scottish borders are all within easy reach and the Carvoran Roman Army Museum and the Fort of Birdoswald, the site of an archaeological dig, are close by. The Roman forts of Housesteads, Vindolanda and Chesters are within a few minutes by car. The village is a five minute walk where there are a couple of pubs and a village cafe. Haltwhistle, known as The Centre of Britain has a wide range of amenities, an open air swimming pool and good bus and rail links to Carlisle in the west or Hexham and Newcastle to the east. Excellent golf locally.

Holmehead – Greenhead

On the border between Northumberland and Cumbria, this ground floor accommodation forms part of the original farmhouse. Approached along a quiet lane, Holmhead is set in a lovely sheltered valley, surrounded by open countryside. The house itself is built directly over the foundations of the Roman Wall and is constructed with stones from the Wall. The ruins of Thirlwall Castle loom above, on the opposite bank of the Tipalt Burn behind the house. There are many delightful riverside walks and the footpath is on the route of the Hadrian’s Wall path and Pennine Way.

What we think: A house on a working farm with a castle as a neighbour…what else could you ask for?
